[INCURSION] Breaking the Bank

Vieri hadn’t jumped immediately to violence; walking in ten minutes late to a town hall meeting he was supposed to be attending anyway, he had asked nicely. About as nicely as one could while making demands and refusing his actual designated seat, and while also looking like he meant every single word of his threat to take the city by force if they didn’t abide by his demands, anyway. As expected, the sixteen-year-old was received by the room mostly full much older rich men with a crowd of surprised states, followed by the second in command trying to suppress a laugh behind his dumb moustache and a disgruntled, seemingly half awake denial from the elderly banker organizing the meeting.
No, the democratic leaders of Florence would not be taking him as their singular, mocharch-like leader or be diverting a percentage of all their profits to his ‘scientific cause’. An asshat of a rival in the market was already plotting to use this demand to call for sanctions on his bank. Several people had a general idea of about how powerful Vieri’s men and numbers were, and would love to see him try to take the city by himself. With their congested pride and combined forces they’d have him stomped out by tomorrow evening.
Vieri had had a feeling this was going to be the case. It was why he had ordered all of his men and his sister to a small town about a day’s trip south and told them to hold until they got a messenger that it was safe to return, likely in no more than a day. He didn’t want them to get unnecessarily caught up in the rubble, and he wanted to decisively prove his point to the council of Florence. His strength was insurmountable; This wasn’t an offer that they submit to every one of his orders, this was a demand.
His face twisted into a knotted scowl at the mockings they kept to themselves or exchanged quietly with a neighbour. He had half a mind to go right on up to one presumptuous old brat who thought it was funny for ‘that idiot’s idiot kid’ to be making these demands, but if he wanted to get his science facilities built into the strongest stone worked buildings and funded by the Florentine guilds, he needed these people alive and able to give orders to their people.
He’d not come very far into the large meeting hall on purpose, and taking four long steps towards the far entrance, he turned towards the thick stonework wall. Their current location, the Palazzo Vecchio, was a sturdy building built like a boulder; it was made with the intention of being easily fortifiable and defendable in case of invasion. It was a perfect shiny toy for him to break in front of these roiderbanks.
Electricity crackled between his fingers as he stretched his hands out in front of him, jumping once between his palms in a blue-purple arc. Confusion began to rise up in the couple who bothered to have eyes. There was a blinding white flash, a deafening bang; likely louder and brighter than anything the Florentines had ever heard or seen before. Anyone within any kind of eyeshot of the central city building would see the bright beam of white-blue light shoot up into the afternoon sky like a beacon, the flash the brightest thing in miles. Next would come the thunderclap, lagging a short ways behind. The wall and roof of the building blasted up and outwards with a cloud of sparks, large chunks of rock shooting out of the crumbling squared corner of the two-story building. A blast of air from the shock wave churned with small rocks and hunks of rubble rushed throughout the room.
The dust began to settle, and the fear in the stomachs and chests of every member in the council knocked free from their seats began to rise. Vieri stood before a gaping hole running the vertical length of the building, now standing under the purple evening sky. The stone nearest to him had melted. Electricity crackled between his fingers, out into the ionized air, and his hair stood on end. The lights of the city lit him from behind as he turned back to the council, his brow lowered into an extremely unamused glare.
“Oi old geezers, I’m not messing around. The rate’s now twenty percent, or I take out the west wall.”
This had been two years coming. He’d tried to expand his economic reach through mundane means, never using his offensive powers in anything but self defense, but the progress was too slow and he was impatient. Scientific discoveries could take years; he couldn’t afford to waste how many just getting enough funding for step one, especially when he had a perfectly good option to speed things up. It was about time he was loud and took every inch he was perfectly capable of taking.
