The entity first appeared like a blurry mirage, high in the sky above Florence. But within a matter of seconds, it shifted into full focus, releasing a thunderous boom as it shunted aside the air that had previously occupied its space. The sound echoed throughout the nearby countryside, and the city fell into silence while the people beheld the colossus above.
It was like something out of a fever dream. The entity was made of countless wings emerging in all directions, each one the size of a small mountain. Enormous golden bands encircled it, apparently floating unsupported in midair. Set into the surface of golden bands were huge unblinking eyeballs of every color. And at the very center, at the place where the wings joined, were four faces that looked as though they had been carved of pure white marble: a lion, a bird, an ox, and a man.

The denizens of Florence had never seen anything like it in their lives. Some of them stood frozen in place, unable to wrap their minds around the being's appearance. Other more learned individuals fell to their knees and praised the appearance of the divine. Then the entity began to descend from the sky, and the smart people turned and ran.
As it got closer, it became clear that the entity was wreathed in a nimbus of flame. The surrounding air was distorted with intense heat. Even when this heat began to reach the city below, the entity didn't slow down.
Within a matter of seconds, the people directly below the entity were gasping for breath as the air became hot enough to sear their lungs. A few seconds later, wooden structures began bursting into flames. The intense heat fed hurricane-force winds that sent burning debris outward in a wave of destruction. The people a few blocks away could hope to survive by hiding in their buildings, but in the very center, it was hot enough that even the sturdiest stone began to glow red hot and melt.
Hundreds were burned to ash in a matter of moments, but the entity showed no sign of caring. It brought its descent to a gradual halt, its lowest ring almost brushing the tops of the buildings. Then, it began to slowly drift across the city, heedless of the swath of destruction it was carving.
This was as nothing compared to the devastation it would soon bring.
