It had started as just another training session. Last time he had practiced with his powers, Jack had noticed that when he grew new material out of a structure, the speed of the growth was very limited, but the width of the growth could be as large as desired. It was hard to put that to the test inside the Academy, even inside the larger training rooms, which meant that he'd have to go outside for further training.
He had settled on Shanghai because the rebuilding effort involved lots of raw materials and wide-open spaces to play with. For the first couple of hours, he had just focused on making gigantic cubes of steel, wood, and glass. He avoided using his power in the direct line of sight of any of the mundane construction workers, but it was only a matter of time until they came across his handiwork and panicked as they tried to figure out how such a huge block of material had suddenly appeared and how they'd get rid of it before it was time to start building whatever was supposed to go there. Still, raw materials could be pretty valuable, and Jack watched with minor interest as the construction bosses discussed how they could turn these inexplicable events into a net profit for their company.
This was fresh in Jack's mind as he eventually got bored of trying to find a limit to his ability to create large amounts of raw material. He had been spending more time lately thinking about how to use his power for good, aside from performing his standard duties at the Academy. The needs of the construction company made for a simple and well-defined goal, so it seemed like Jack had a straightforward way to help people here. It rankled a bit that he'd be indirectly helping the Isabellos, but it was probably only a matter of time until they lost control of the city, so Jack didn't worry about it too much.
Jack spent the next several hours making pipes, I-beams, stacks of drywall, and coils of wire. He found that he wasn't able to work precisely enough to make functional screws, but nails were just fine. Each object grew out of a nearby wall of the same substance, then fell to the ground into its own pile of other objects of its type. He had just about filled an empty lot with the supplies when he saw a familiar face.
It was fitting that Hikaru would be walking by, since it was her advice that had gotten Jack thinking along these lines in the first place. His upper body emerged from a half-finished I-beam that was itself emerging from the adjacent warehouse so that he could get her attention.
"Hey, Hikaru! Hey! Check this out!"
