She wasn’t in Florence. She wasn’t in the halls, or with the shadow mage or the building mage. The cafeteria was full of people, not one of them her sister. Hayako was running out of places to look.
Hikaru wouldn’t just vanish, not after a fight like this. She’d be leading the civilians to a new place of safety, or making sure all the mages were okay, or have fallen unconscious in one of the cities. She wasn’t hard to miss. If she was awake, she’d be making herself very visible too; if she wasn’t leading one of those two charges, she’d be leading some kind of one.
So she had to be unconscious, right? Right, it made sense, given the rumors were her light had vanished into the thing and not come back out. It meant she probably fell unconscious and fell out of the sky. It’d be important to find her quickly and make sure she hadn’t sustained any mortal wounds. As long as she could get her and bring her to the nurse, everything would be okay. Hikaru would be fine.
But she wasn’t anywhere. She wasn’t in the city she was last seen in, or Kyoto where the monster had gone next, or any of the other cities. She’d looked; Hayako had looked hard, digging through enough rubble she’d saved a handful of other civians lucky enough to avoid the heat but not avoid the crumbling buildings. She’d searched all over the academy. She’d even stepped into all of the information age cities, hoping to find her somewhere strange helping people or some mage.
Still, no matter where she looked, she couldn’t find Hikaru. Hayako was getting to the spot where she was grabbing people and asking them if they had seen her sister. Her wide eyes, body covered in dirt and her clothing in burns and tears, and her hair completely disheveled from the fight, she looked startling even for the aftermath of the fight. A few people’s heart rates certainly seemed to shoot up when she took their shoulders and in a jumble of words asked them where Hikaru was.
Hayako had returned to the ruins of Florence, where people had last said they’d seen Hikaru. She’d already been over the entire city twice, it felt, digging through all the rubble and the underground shelters. Her sister wasn’t dead, she just hadn’t looked hard enough. And since she still didn’t have the body of her sister, she wasn’t stopping.
There weren’t many people here anymore - not any living ones, anyway - so seeing a standing person as she exited through a particularly large pile of ruble was stark. Her heart leapt into her throat in the hope that maybe this was Hikaru, a hope that didn’t last long but did have her running quickly towards the figure. Even as the woman’s real form and identity come into view, Hayako only sort of slowed. The same went as she gets quite close - ‘stopping’ came by means of her exiting her intangibility, grabbing the mage’s shoulders, and sort of getting her footing beneath her as she tried to stop her momentum as she steps directly in front of Diana. It’s the step after and a full stride to Diana’s left that she actually does so.
“You- Spear lady- Diana- h-have you seen Hikaru?” Her eyes were wide with panic and she looked a little like she’d been eaten, partially digested, and then spat back out - worse, even than the last time they’d met on the battlefield.
