Hikaru still found it difficult to shake her disappointment with the academy. She hoped that someone would be able to explain magic and how it worked to her, but most of the people involved didn't seem that much more experienced than she was. Even most of the staff were younger than she was. It didn't seem like she'd get much help with the more volatile parts of her power in this place. The only reason she even bothered to stick around as long as she had was to keep an eye on her younger sister, who was prone to making some less than desirable decisions. However, if she was going to be doing that anyway, she figured she should take some time to really get a feel for everything the academy had to offer.
For the most part she still wasn't impressed. There were several things that were useful, such as the living accommodations and the free food, and a few things that did strike legitimate awe in her, such as the library, but she wasn't sure how she felt about using a lot of them given how the academy was run. It seemed more like an excuse to get the students to fight each other rather than a legitimate educational establishment. However, after a few days of thinking about it, she determined that if there was still use in this place she might as well make use of it. Even if her focus was her sister, she still hoped that she could deter some of the other young mages from making terrible decisions. Getting to know them might be useful.
That didn't mean she was going to be particularly social unless she had to though. Hikaru had no intention of refusing conversation unless the person proved to be completely terrible or they were trying to provoke her, but she still didn't go out of her way to initiate either. She wasn't particularly direct when dealing with people. Instead, she simply lived and acted as she thought she should. She helped people when they needed it, intervened when they were going to do something stupid, and otherwise focused on controlling the parts of her power she couldn't. She could already tell she was making progress in that regard. It was getting easier and easier to control the temperature of the fire around her, to the point that she was now able to be cool enough that she wouldn't melt metal by getting too close to it anymore. She would if she touched it, but she hoped that people would have enough common sense to not touch someone that was literally covered in magical flames. It would hopefully mean that being around her with her power active would be less oppressive for anyone else around her.
Today, Hikaru was focusing on some of the other aspects of her power. There was one facility that she could probably make use of now that she was unlikely to melt anything in there. The floor was tile, so a material she was likely to damage if she stood on it, but it wasn't very flammable and the room was wide open and didn't have very much in it. Aside from the mess the custodian was going to have to clean up with some scorched tiles, it was perfect. There were some weapons on the wall she could use for practice, and while that was somewhat dangerous, she doubted they'd ever get close enough to her to cause any damage, and as long as she kept her distance from any doors, she figured anyone that came in would have enough time to realize there were sharp objects flying around the room. Thus, Hikaru activated her power and was instantly covered in flames. Loose bits of tile and dust, as well as some of the smaller weapons that weren't secured very well started orbiting around her. Rather than grab any more, she opted to focus on the few that were around her already, trying to control how they moved. She had some success, but there were several times where the weapons didn't go the direction she expected and started flying towards her face, or towards one of the doors. She tried to correct it as quickly as she could, but she wasn't completely sure how a lot of this worked. It wasn't true telekinesis or anything; there was definitely another force at work, but she didn't know how to describe it. Everything wanted to spin around her and even trying to move objects directly just made them spin around her a little differently. It was strange and she was still figuring out how to get things to move the way she wanted because of that.
