In the year 2012, a mysterious illness began to sweep the globe. In its wake, those who survived it were left with immensely powerful supernatural abilities.
As the number of people capable of wielding magic powers increased, they began to organize and seize control of the course of history. Using their powers to travel between parallel universes, these mages forge empires of a scale never before seen. And at the center of it all is the Academy, a neutral institution founded for mages to share their knowledge with each other.
Mages struggle against each other to impose their will upon the multiverse, but there is one threat that unites them all together. In recent months, mysterious entities have appeared. These entities wield power far greater than any one mage, and they seem determined to annihilate all of humanity. The mages will have to set aside their differences in order to beat them. The fate of the multiverse depends on it.

Last time the dog bit her it was bad. Somehow this was even worse. Her leg was mangled badly enough that she couldn't walk, and it was bleeding heavily. Her back had been torn apart and was bleeding just as much. The only saving grace was that this time it didn't puncture her stomach so at least the only fluid flowing out of her body this time was blood. Unfortunately, it was far more blood than last time and the effects were starting to show themselves. Hikaru was unusually pale and was starting to see some black spots.
It didn't matter. She had to leave and she had to make sure Hayako came with her. She'd been injured before, she could fight through this. Slowly, she started to sit up, pain shooting through her body with every movement. The adrenaline was keeping her up before, but once it became clear to her body that there was no danger here, the pain hit her like a truck and the blood loss was quickly starting to get to her. Hikaru staggered, failing to do much more than get one of her elbows under her to help her get up, and collapsed on the ground. Her consciousness slowly started failing as she failed to stop sleep from taking her.

The descent of New York into anarchy came as a shocking surprise to most, but the mundane authorities of the Information Age had known for some time that it was only a matter of time before mages began to tear down the existing social order. The relevant contingency was put into play immediately: New York would be given up as a lost cause. Martial law was declared, local crimefighting resources were redirected toward keeping the chaos from spreading to the rest of the eastern US, and financial and administrative assets were hurriedly moved elsewhere.
However, not everything could be moved out of the city. In the days following the riot, listening posts abandoned by various world intelligence agencies would be found. The information left behind would clearly indicate that at least a few mages had decided to remain loyal to their mundane governments, and those mages have been providing the authorities with information about the Academy and the portals to other universes.
Even with detailed information about the Academy, the governments of this age couldn't truly pose any threat. The only arguable significance in this development is the specific information uncovered. According to the information the intelligence agencies had, there are only three human-occupied universes currently connected by portals: 2018, 1448, and 1989.
