Name: Jack Mason
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Group: Seeker
Homeworld: The Information Age: 2018 CE
Occupation: Academy Custodian
Face Claim: Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt - Brief
Appearance:
Jack is clearly in his early teens. At just over 5 feet tall and just under 100 pounds in weight, he's somewhat short and scrawny for his age. He most often wears a baggy jumpsuit that tends to remain remarkably clean despite his line of work. He tries to give off an impression of self-confidence and authority, but this is quickly shattered whenever he gets flustered.
Talents:
His main strength is his self-discipline. He's not particularly smart, but he can stay focused on tedious tasks without getting sloppy or distracted. He also has a talent for housekeeping, and he's been studying the basics of HVAC and electronics in order to make better use of his power.
Personality:
There's a huge gap between the personality Jack wants to have and the personality he actually has. As a member of the Academy staff, Jack feels that he's supposed to be stern, vigilant, and aloof. In reality, he's neurotic, naive, and hungry for the approval of his peers. He's overall happier than he's ever been, but that's not saying much.
His favorite passtime is patrolling the Academy, cleaning up trash and debris, and patching up any damage as best he can with his power. If he encounters any students who don't immediately demand his attention, then he'll mostly ignore them (although he will redouble his cleaning efforts in order to show off). He's never quite sure how to respond when directly engaged in conversation, so he tries to deflect attention and then retreat as soon as possible.
He has one very obvious pet peeve: when he spots students littering or damaging the Academy, he'll go to great lengths to bring vengeance down upon their heads (though cleaning or repairing the damage is his first priority). In fact, this seems to be the only situation in which his social awkwardness goes away. He isn't prone to hold grudges, but he does show gratitude toward students who help him in his quest to keep the Academy clean and intact.
Jack doesn't venture outside the Academy much. When he does, other mages find it easy to rope him into their plots as long as they can spin some justification to explain how their plans are for the good of the Academy. He's not completely without empathy, but he has a simplistic worldview where his duty to the Academy overrides everything else. He finds it easy to just not think about how mages' actions affect normal people.
History:
Jack was born out of wedlock and immediately put up for adoption. His early childhood was spent in a group home. Once he began to attend school, his shy nature and small stature made him a natural target for bullying. Eventually, it got bad enough that his caseworker decided the best solution would be to move him to a new school to try to make a fresh start. That also meant moving him to a new home.
The solution was only a temporary one. Jack's personality and mannerisms had also developed in such a way as to make him stand out as an easy victim, and the fact that he was already an outsider in the new school didn't help matters any. A year later, he was transferred again, and then again and again after that, zigzagging his way across California.
Each transfer brought with it a new foster family. The lack of structure wasn't good for Jack's psyche, especially considering that some of his foster parents thought that the solution to his bullying problems was to "toughen him up." Jack retreated inward, trying to find a mental state where he felt in control over his life. He became obsessive about cleaning and organizing his room in order to maintain a semblance of consistency between his homes.
Jack was 13 when he came down with a mysterious illness. It was thought to be a nervous breakdown from being bullied. When he finally recovered, he was behind on schoolwork and his absence had fueled rampant rumors throughout the class. As he was cornered by the bullies in an out-of-the-way hall of the school building, Jack began to wish he could just sink into the floor and disappear - and so he did.
As he realized the extent of his new powers, Jack ran away from home and never looked back. His need for food and water had apparently been decreased by the emergence of his powers, and so Jack had no trouble surviving on (or in) the street. One day, while exploring Los Angeles, Jack came across a portal to the newly-founded Academy hidden in the locked basement of an abandoned building. Encouraged by the fact that there were other people like him, he gladly offered his help and soon immersed himself in Academy life.
Since then, Jack has had his hands full trying to protect the Academy from its rowdy students. What little free time he has is spent training his powers and studying supplementary skills. He hasn't had much chance to think about long-term goals, but he's probably happier that way.
Magic Overview:
Jack has the ability to merge with buildings. While merged, his human body partially or completely disappears and he gains the ability to reshape the building. This reshaping can also include causing the building to absorb and destroy inanimate matter - including trash, which is Jack's preferred method of cleaning up messes. Damage to the building sometimes causes Jack's human body to be ejected and stunned, but the exact circumstances that cause this are unknown.
Tools:
Because Jack doesn't seem to be able to use held tools while merged with a building, he doesn't have any combat gear. He does carry around mundane custodial supplies, though, for cases where something he can't merge with gets dirty or damaged. This is actually tangentially relevant to his combat performance, since he prefers to clean a mess up before going after those who made it.
