Name: Maia Ramires Garcia Castelo
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Group: Seekers
Homeworld: The Information Age 2018 CE
Occupation: Academy Nurse
Face Claim: Girls und Panzer – Hoshino
Appearance: Taller than average at 5’7”, Maia weighs around 160lb at any given time. She follows a loose regimen of diet and exercise in order to maintain an athletic figure. Naturally a little top-heavy, she is shaped more like an inverted triangle. Maia tries to keep attention away from her proportionately short legs, by wearing flashier tops to distract anyone that might be looking.
Her wardrobe is filled with clothes of various bright colors—usual choices being white, sky blue and green. When she is working Maia puts on a loose-fitting dress that goes down to her knees. There’s a matching hat with a cross on the front that’s supposed to make her look more official. Any other time, she sticks with the laziest option available. Skirts, t-shirts, maybe a jacket if it isn’t scorching hot outside. One of several pairs of boots of different lengths are the last part of the outfit.
As far as accessories are concerned, she usually has three earrings in each ear. A silver necklace has a key attached to it, but she doesn’t seem to take it off to unlock anything.
Talents: Camping: Maia lives for the ability to experience new things and visit places barely anyone has seen. She schedules one week out of every month for “training” in some beautiful, exotic location away from civilization.
Photography: Even before she was able to leave her home town, taking pictures of local scenery always helped her relax. Having a photo for reference makes it easier to talk about the experience later. There's a clear bias towards including all the cute animals she's seen throughout her travels.
Cooking: Living a highly active lifestyle requires eating a lot to keep going. Before joining The Academy, she specialized in finding new ways to make cheap things taste good. Now she prepares better meals in bulk and always has something on hand for emergencies.
Martial Arts: Her magic involves a lot of punches and kicks, so learning how to properly fight seemed important. Since she only recently began studying, it’s more of a fascination than a true talent. She hasn't really chosen a particular style yet.
Model building: At first, she just put together a lot of store-bought remote controlled cars, but has started to branch out into other things. Currently she is in the middle of designing a fake city for the tiny cars to drive around.
Personality: Behaving as though she has more confidence than she naturally possesses has become a way of life. It is important for Maia to give off this aura of not being bothered that easily. In public she’s all carefree and in control of whatever situation. Behaving this way tends to be more productive than her natural habits. She even manages to fool herself sometimes.
As much as she tries to convince herself about the importance of positive thinking, her old pessimistic nature occasionally sets in. She’s always had this tendency to overanalyze situations, making problems larger than they really are. It takes a while for frustration to reach a boiling point, but once she gets upset she tends to stay that way. Expect a lot of bad decisions as she tries really hard to just escape. Find somewhere less annoying to relax. Ideally, alone, as having others around increases her worrying.
Her efforts to avoid being angry are one of the only times when Maia prioritizes her well-being above that of others. After all, if she isn’t working at one hundred percent, any attempt at helping out would backfire. So she’s more likely to shrug her shoulders and follow someone else’s plan. Disagreeing leads to arguments, and arguments build stress. Since making the maximum number of people happy is the entire point, she avoids fighting until it is clear which position fulfills that goal.
Even after gaining these magic abilities, it’s easier to relate to unpowered humans. She treats them more favorably, with higher levels of patience and understanding. Maia remembers what it was like being (relatively) weak and squishy. Even the worst mage could overpower an entire group of regular people. She clearly has a few problems with how the Academy functions in general, but refuses to go into any detail about that.
By itself, magic is an extremely useful tool that cold lead to a positive, significant change in society. Imagining how all of this weird abilities could somehow be useful keeps Maia interested in helping the other mages succeed, even if she feels a little uncomfortable with their immediate goals. It is clear that she joined the Academy to meet others who want to improve the world. For a brief moment, there was the idea of relocating to a new universe and starting from scratch, but she couldn’t abandon her own time line while the rest of the mages did whatever they wanted.
Eventually, somebody is going to try and use magic to take over everything, and will actually have the strength to do so. There’s no way to stop that. There doesn’t seem to be any way to stop that. Not without living forever. Making sure that the best person winds up in charge would be ideal. Maia hopes to come up with a better plan before that day arrives, but all the immediate problems distract her from worrying about the far future.
It is clear that, however much she cares about humanity in general, this only applies to improving her own home world. There’s too many other timelines out there in the multiverse. Attempting to save every one of them sounds impossible. Each new place has their own history, and Maia barely feels confident enough to interfere with situations she understands. It’s a little harder to ignore a situation that’s right in front of her, but she doesn’t see a reason to go out of her way to fix anything outside of 2018.
History: From the very beginning, Maia wanted the opportunity to travel the world. Hearing stories of all these far away places across the ocean exited her kid brain. A tiny hand pointed at a painting of some castle as she told her father that she wanted to live there. As her parents only child, it seemed like they were ready to promise her anything.
Over time, she came to lower her expectations. For one, buying a giant castle would be impossible, so there went that idea. Maia considered herself fortunate enough being born into the upper middle class, and didn’t need anything more. Santos was one of the nicer areas of Brazil to grow up in—at least, according to her family. Leaving for a really long time sounded cooler before she had any friends. A vacation seemed like enough to appease her desire to travel. Since it was her idea, she wanted to contribute somehow and earn the trip. Otherwise the guilt of not sacrificing anything would prevent her from enjoying the whole event.
Together with her family, they all agreed on a plan. Maia had to study extra hard to do well in her private school. Pass all the tests. Once she got accepted into a university, she could spend the summer beforehand traveling abroad. Maybe even go it alone. The whole idea of pushing things back until after high school was her idea, because it didn’t feel right to earn a reward for any of the lesser graduations. She’d be too distracted once they returned to focus on learning. As an adult, she’d be mature enough to keep studying.
Maia had an easy time stating that she would pass every one of her classes. . . Actually doing the work wound up being tougher than anticipated. She couldn’t go back on her word. Either she finished or she died trying. For a while there, it looked like she could go either way.
Death from overwork sounded like a fake condition, until the December she turned seventeen. As the school year came to an end, she started getting sick more often. It was more like a constant fever that occasionally peaked, then went back down. Each time, her average temperature stayed higher than before the spike. Eventually there was a week where she was too delusional to leave her bedroom.
Afterwards, she made a full recovery. Doctors said she was fine, not that Maia felt any better. She had to repeat a course, thanks to showing up for the final only to stare at a blank page for two hours. She might have been sick, but that was an excuse. She deserved to fail for even reaching that level of exhaustion.
Anyone could have predicted that the second time around would be easier, but even Maia was shocked by her ability to remember everything. Even outside of that class, the right answer emerged from her subconscious fairly often.
Life continued on innocently enough for a month. During a holiday party, she got pulled aside by some strange tourist girl. They were going on about auras and spirit guides. Noticed Maia walking around half-possessed and wanted to make sure everything was cool. Before either girl could react, a slightly transparent woman wearing a police uniform appeared between them and confirmed that there was nothing to worry about.
Wait.
That might have convinced the tourist chick, but now Maia was left with so many questions. Apparently magic is an actual thing people have access to. There wasn’t much room to deny what just happened in front of her. There was even this whole secret community built around people who ended up with strange abilities. Had their own special Academy any everything.
It all seemed a little intimidating, but Maia knew she couldn’t hide out forever. She was too afraid to experiment with a power she knew nothing about, but that school should be safe. A place like that might even have an explanation for how her magic worked. There had to be some useful purpose for this ghost thing (aside from standing around and looking pretty). Might even be able to solve some of the larger problems happening around Brazil, or the world.
The opportunity to explore other universes was more of a side benefit.
Magic Overview: Maia has a guardian angel that follows her everywhere, although their expected roles are reversed. The pale, heavily armored woman floats around in the back lines, performing most of the obvious spell casting. They can summon other lesser spirits to repair objects and heal allies. Meanwhile, Maia handles the duo’s offense, equipping magical armor that increases her strength to supernatural levels. This mainly gets used to punch things really hard.
