As she soared across the breathtaking Dubai skyline she couldn't help but to think to herself, "I am not in Kansas anymore."
It was a cliche thought, no doubt, but it was true. In Kansas everything was flat and dull. Here, buildings of innumerable shapes, sizes and designs stretched as far as the eye could see... well, okay, not as far as she could see while she was this high up, but the idiom still applied. Everywhere she looked, Mary Jo Miller was impressed by the architecture and engineering marvels on display in this awe-inspiring city. She had a bit of a knack for engineering herself, even if skyscrapers and Trump Tower ripoffs weren't exactly her forte.
Her forte was weapons. Machines. Armored vehicles, designed for either land or water or air, and intended to carry weapons that would make the US Government nervous if they ever found out about her existence. She was in one such creation now, a metallic fully encased bodysuit that was a total Iron Man rip off, she had to admit, but it was still pretty freaking awesome. Plus, it didn't look exactly like the suit from the movies. Mary Jo's creation was clunkier, shorter and with more bulk, and the helmet on this thing extended out a bit at the mouth, almost like a bird's beak. It also had a major cruise missile fixed on its back.
She carefully leaned her body this way and that, making sure to adjust the thrust sensors hooked up to her right hand, as she maneuvered her way between buildings. Last thing she wanted to do was hit the gas too hard and accidentally break through a window into somebody's board room meeting. This was a sightseeing expedition after all, not a mission to ruffle feathers. Although Mary Jo had figured out pretty early on that wherever mages were, trouble followed.
She had been in the air close to an hour, just floating around and taking it all in, when she decided to touch down. She found a secluded alley and lowered herself, collapsing the suit into itself as soon as her foot touched the ground. The suited creaked and cranked loudly as it retracted, something she would have to work on, as it folded itself into a backpack that hung tightly on her shoulders. Not totally inconspicuous, but better than nothing.
She headed for the main street and tried to orient herself again, taking in the city anew from the street level. She pulled out her phone and searched out a few restaurants to try while she was here. She didn't have much time in the UAE until she needed to hop in a portal back to the Academy and then take another portal back home, but she intended to make good use of the time she did have... assuming she didn't run into any trouble.
