Things had changed in the Academy after the battle with the burning entity. The students had all been forced to fight for their lives alongside each other, and they were mostly too worn out afterwards to worry about the petty rivalries that had seemed so important beforehand. They were all left asking the same questions, and many of them had turned their attention to the rest of the multiverse as they looked for answers. The Academy itself was more peaceful than ever. With fewer students starting trouble and breaking things for its own sake, Jack didn't have nearly as much work to do.
That really just made things worse for him. Jack was the sort of person who enjoyed losing himself in tasks that others might consider tedious. It helped calm his stress and anxiety, which would have been especially welcome in the wake of Hikaru's death. She had been the closest thing he had to a friend, and much of his motivation in recent weeks had been focused on living up to her expectations. But now that she was gone, it just seemed like there wasn't any point.
Eventually, someone did make a mess that forced him into action. It wasn't anything deliberate or malicious, just a spilled plate of food, to small to even get angry about. Jack had walked over to the mess, but he couldn't muster the willpower to use his magic to get rid of it. A smear of ketchup caught his attention. It reminded him of blood. He wondered if Hikaru's death had been bloody and painful, or if she had been killed instantly. He didn't really want to know the answer, either way, but he couldn't stop thinking about it.
And so he just stood there silently, staring down at the spilled food for several minutes. He was barely aware of the nearly-deserted cafeteria behind him, and he was completely motionless aside from the occasional tear running down his cheek.
