The new universe that had been opened up offered countless new perspectives to those who went there. Its history was different, its cultures were different, and plenty of things that were taken for granted by those from the main timeline were not applicable at all to the societies of the Flooded World. But for Jack, the greatest discovery he had made was related to something he could easily have found in any universe:
Boats.
His power worked on them. He had never had cause to try his power on vehicles before. He could jump from building to building faster than a car, and for long journeys by air or sea, it was generally easier to just use the Academy's portals. Here in the Flooded World, though, plenty of smaller islands near any given portal city were only accessible by boat, and that meant that Jack found himself riding boats on a regular basis. It was only a matter of time until he tried using his power and found himself merging with one.
He had to be more careful than he was when inside a stationary building, though. Already, he had accidentally sunk someone's boat by growing extra wood on it. The added weight had caused it to float lower and lower in the water until the deck was under the waves, and within a matter of minutes its hold full of expensive-looking cargo had sunken to the bottom of the sea. Jack had fled across the docks quickly in hopes that no one would connect the mysterious sinking to the kid in strange clothes.
Since then, he had been moving more stealthily and trying to avoid attention. As he skulked between the crates that filled the docks, his attention was captured by a very unusual-looking ship. Instead of distinct planks, its wood all seemed to have grown together naturally, and its mast was a great tree whose branches were green with live growth. Jack instantly wanted to know how it was put together, and the best way to figure it out would be to merge with it using his power.
He snuck as close as he could, then broke out into a run. He aimed to dash directly into the side of the ship, using his power to walk right into it.
However, for some reason, it didn't work. He slammed face-first into the side of the ship, his head cracking against it with a solid thunk, then fell on his back, dazed and bloodied.
